Fort Mill is very vibrant with homes ranging from the mid $100,000 up to 2 Million. With the recent announcement of lowering property taxes, this sleepy mill town is growing at an even faster pace.
Fort Mill was established 1873 and is located just south of the state line shared with North Carolina. The closest neighbors are Rock Hill, SC, to the south and Charlotte, NC, to the north. About 9400 people live inside the Town's corporate limits with a total of nearly 35,000 people residing within the entire Township.
Fort Mill takes its name from a colonial-era fort built by the British and a grist mill on nearby Steele Creek. The area has a rich history. The Catawba Indians made their home here for many years. Scotch-Irish settlers began arriving in the 1750's and 1760's and a small settlement soon developed. Fort Mill grew rapidly in the late 1800's as textile mills were established.
NY Times: A Sleepy Mill Town Coming to Life
Because of the close proximity to uptown Charlotte it has become home to many professionals. The commute time is less than 25 minutes since Fort Mill runs along the I-77 corridor (30 to 35 min.commute in high traffic). The town has some of the best Schools (Blue Ribbon Award and Bill Gates Foundation Model School) and attracts many families with school age children. See Fort Mill School Report Here . Educational consultant Don Thomas, who has conducted a quality assessment of the district, ranked the Fort Mill schools in the "top 5 percent of all school districts in the United States."
There are nearby recreational opportunities like Lake Wylie with beaches, fishing, walking trails and a huge YMCA facility in Baxter. This environment has attracted a large amount of trailing grandparents, and some have moved to the neighboring Sun City Carolina Lakes, an active, 55 plus adult community. Baxter Village was designed to put merchants back at the heart of everyday life and foster close relationships between neighbors. Rocking chair front porches, tree-lined streets, trails and classic homes make walking to BaxterTownCenter a forgotten pleasure of small town life.
Baxter is taking great steps to recreate that vibrant community spirit where sidewalks and front porches frame the streets and the entire neighborhood is your home
The parks and walking trails at BaxterVillage are among the most unique and matchless amenities within the Village. Enjoy 400 acres of green space, including woods, parks and plenty of walking trails. View a map of Baxter's trail system. Baxter's trail network links to a series of parks, fountains and playgrounds located throughout the community. The Village Green is a grassy park that's perfect for kite flying. And 12-acre Allison Park has a playground, bandstand and a walk-through fountain. Eventually, the trail network will extend to a planned park at the Catawba River southwest of Baxter. Nearby, 2,300-acre Anne Springs Close Greenway has 26 miles of hiking trails. Because of the near vicinity of lakes and recreation many baby boomers are trailing to be near their grandchildren.
